Saab signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) on 30 June 2026 under which 16 Gripen E fighter aircraft are being procured for Ukraine.

The order is valued at around SEK 24.6 billion (EUR 2.2 billion) and will be booked in the third quarter of 2026. Saab’s deliveries to the FMV are scheduled to take place in the 2029-2030 timeframe.

Plans for the Ukrainian Air Force to purchase an initial batch of up to 20 Gripen E/Fs while Sweden donates up to 16 Gripen C/Ds to Ukraine from the Swedish Air Force’s inventory, were announced by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a press conference in Uppsala, Sweden, on 28 May 2026.

Zelenskyy stated on his X social media account on 30 June, “Together with Sweden, we continue strengthening Ukraine’s combat aviation. Today, our countries signed an agreement for the procurement of 16 Gripen E fighter jets. Importantly, the aircraft will come with a package of related equipment, technical assistance and support. In addition, under our previous agreements with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the first 16 Gripen C/D aircraft will be transferred to our air force at the beginning of 2027.”
