Saab has received a contract from France’s Naval Group to deliver and integrate fire control systems, sensors and weapons for the four FDI (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention) frigates being built by Naval Group for the Swedish Navy, Saab announced on 6 November 2026.

Sweden signed the contract for the four frigates on 31 August 2026, with the first delivery scheduled for 2030. Although being built by Naval Group as a more-or-less ‘off-the-shelf to expedite delivery, the Swedish FDI frigates will feature numerous Saab systems, including a weapon control system, the Ceros radar and electro-optical tracking fire control director, the EOS 500 electro-optical fire director and the Sea Giraffe 1X lightweight multi-mission surveillance radar.

Saab weapon systems that will arm the Swedish FDI frigates include the RBS15 anti-ship missile, the Saab Lightweight Torpedo (SLWT) and the Trackfire remote weapon station.

The order value of Saab-supplied systems for the Swedish FDI frigates totals approximately SEK 2 billion (EUR 180 million), with deliveries to Naval Group taking place between 2027 and 2034.

“We are proud to equip Swedish ships with our cutting-edge products,” Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Naval business area, was quoted as saying in a Saab press release. “This shows that Saab not only continues to provide capabilities with the highest relevance to our home market, but also that we achieve it through co-operations.

“The Swedish Navy will gain advanced and integrated capabilities to detect, deter, and respond to threats above and below the surface, while effectively countering evolving asymmetric threats across the maritime domain,” Wicksell added.

Other FDI orders

The French Navy has ordered five FDI frigates, the first of which, Amiral Ronarc’h, was delivered on 17 October 2025 and is expected to be commissioned in the spring of 2027.

The Hellenic Navy, meanwhile, has ordered four FDI vessels, the first of which, Kimon, was commissioned on 15 January 2026.
