Thales UK, in conjunction with Finland’s Patria, unveiled a Patria 6×6 armoured personnel carrier featuring the company’s RAPIDRanger weapon system at the DVD 2026 event, held at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire from 16-17 September.
Most immediately the solution is directed towards the short-range air defence (SHORAD) aspect of the UK’s Land Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD) requirement, which is currently in an assessment and preliminary market engagement phase, supported by a GBP 1.5 billion (EUR 1.74 billion) commitment in the 2026 Defence Investment Plan. However, the RAPIDRanger /Patria 6×6 combination also looks to leverage the UK’s participation in the international, Patria-led Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, built around the Patria 6×6, that is designed to deliver a standardised, next-generation 6×6 AFV to streamline defence logistics, deliver lower lifecycle costs and build collective operational readiness. The UK officially joined the CAVS programme, alongside Norway, on 9 September 2025, joining Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden.
The RAPIDRanger system is armed with Thales’ STARStreak high-velocity surface-to-air missiles and Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) and is designed to be a highly automated system capable of delivering a rapid-reaction response to threats from the air or the ground. The system weighs less than 500 kg and, being of modular design, can be fitted to many types of wheeled or tracked vehicles. The main components of the system are a servo-driven turret, the weapon’s operator human machine interface (HMI), a Stabilised Sight Head (SSH) and two missile panniers. The SSH contains daylight and thermal imaging cameras integrated with an automatic target tracker and laser guidance unit to support the STARStreak and LMM, and an optional laser rangefinder.
The RAPIDRanger system is designed to include an integral 360° surveillance sensor – either a passive infra red search and track (IRST) sensor or an integrated surveillance and track radar – to facilitate completely autonomous operation.
RAPIDRanger options under CAVS
Speaking to Warsight at DVD on 16 September, Joe Barry, sales manager at Thales UK, said, “This is this is a good example of us working with Patria, working off our own backs, to come up with options for what the future offer could look like.” He added that, although Thales has the UK GBAD requirement in mind, there is also export potential for the system in mind, given that, once one CAVS member has bought the system, all other members of the CAVS consortium could benefit from that.
The RAPIDRanger/Patria 6×6 combination is currently in the concept phase and has not yet been fully integrated, but Barry noted that the anticipated next stage is to move to a live firing “at some point next year”.
