Team LionStrike, the industrial grouping that is jointly pursuing the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) requirement, announced during the DVD 2026 event, held at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire from 16-17 September, that it has appointed NP Aerospace as prime contractor for that effort.

NP Aerospace is currently the engineering and design authority for UK MoD protected mobility and light utility vehicles and delivers full lifecycle support for more than 50% of the UK’s military ground vehicle fleet.

As well as NP Aerospace, Team LionStrike comprises US company GM Defense, which is providing the vehicles on which the bid is based (variants of the Silverado HD, Silverado LD pickup and Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV), as well as BAE Systems, which provides the capacity to surge production along with expertise on programme leadership; sensor, weapon and mission systems integration; and conversion of vehicles to a right-hand-drive configuration.

As Team LionStrike prime contractor, NP Aerospace will lead the UK customer interface and programme delivery, working with BAE Systems and GM Defence to integrate capabilities across the team.

NP Aerospace has also been appointed as an official original equipment manufacturing (OEM) certified support provider for the GM vehicles proposed for the programme, enabling the company to diagnose, service, maintain, modify and repair GM vehicles in the UK and on deployed operations.

David Petheram, NP Aerospace’s managing director and senior vice president for vehicle systems, services and spares, was quoted in a company press release as stating, “We are delighted to be appointed by Team LionStrike as its prime contractor and to be selected by GM Defence for this vital support role. These appointments reflect our commercial and technical expertise and longstanding commitment to supporting military forces globally. By working directly with GM’s OEM ecosystem, we can deliver UK-based programme and support services that help maintain safety, resilience and operational readiness throughout the life of these fleets.”

The LMV programme

As part of the UK MoD’s overall Land Mobility Programme (LMP), the LMV requirement is intended to directly replace the UK’s legacy light, mobile tactical platforms, most specifically the Land Rover- and Pinzgauer-based fleets that are due to be retired by 2030. In all nine LMV variants, all to be derived from a common base platform (CBP), have been specified under the MOD’s tender notice, which was formally issued in early August 2026: a General Purpose Vehicle (GPV); a Battlefield Ambulance (BFA); a Tactical Mobility Vehicle (TMV); a Utility Vehicle (UV); an Enhanced Protection Vehicle (EPV); a Command and Control Vehicle (C2V); an Equipment Support Vehicle (ESV); a Troop Carrying Vehicle (TCV); and a Mission Systems Vehicle (MSV).

By 19 October 2026 at the earliest the MoD will give three weeks’ notice of the deadline for the competitors to deliver examples of three LMV variants: a General Purpose Vehicle, a Tactical Mobility Vehicle and a Battlefield Ambulance.

The bidders that have successfully delivered these three examples will then see their vehicles competitively trialled, with a final downselect and initial rollout contract then issued, most likely in the spring of 2027. An initial operational capability with the selected vehicles is expected to come in the 2029-2030 timeframe.

Apart from Team LionStrike, numerous other consortia have announced their intention to bid for the LMV requirement, including: Team Grenadier, comprising primarily INEOS Automotive, SMT Defence and NMS UK, that is bidding solutions based on the INEOS Grenadier 4×4; Babcock and Supacat, offering the General Logistics Vehicle family built upon the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series platform; Ford, GDLS-UK and Ricardo, with a bid leveraging the Ford Ranger commercial pick-up architecture for a scalable, military-grade platform; and Jaguar Land Rover, bidding a range of vehicles based on its current Defender Wolf Series II.

Confidence from Team LionStrike

Speaking to Warsight at DVD 2026 on 16 September, a senior executive associated with Team LionStrike outlined how he sees the LMV bid playing out, expecting that the trials will “form something of a dialog”.

“Based on the trials, there will be feedback, and I believe that the requirements will be revised, updated or refined,” he said, “so that we can get to a final set of requirements that will then be the basis for the final ITT [invitation to tender].”

At that point Team LionStrike and the other bidders will need to firm up their plans for how to deliver the other LMV variants beyond the three types submitted for the trials.

Regarding the Enhanced Protection Vehicle, NP Aerospace will be able to bring its experience with armouring vehicles as well as producing body armour to the bid, with the senior executive noting that the heavy-duty variant of the Silverado will likely form the basis for that vehicle due to the additional weight of the armour.

Overall, the executive expressed confidence in the Team LionStrike bid, noting the supply chain resilience of GM Defense’s parent company General Motors, which produces around 500,00 pick-up trucks every year.

In terms of a surge capacity to provide the LMV fleet, he said, “GM Defense can deliver on that – at a really good price.”

He additionally noted that Team LionStrike can leverage General Motors’ R&D spend, which amounts to between USD 8.5-10.5 billion (EUR 7.41-9.15 billion every year.
