Lockheed Martin withdraws TF-50N from US Navy’s Undergraduate Jet Training System contest

Arguably the best candidate to meet the US Navy’s Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) requirement, the KAI TF-50N has been withdrawn from the competition because Lockheed Martin concluded that it could not offer “the required level of US content”.

The US Navy hopes to field 216 aircraft under its Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) programme to replace the ageing Boeing/BAe T-45 Goshawk fleet and has set a USD 1.8 billion (EUR 1.53 billion) not-to-exceed price for engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) for the solution, including up to seven low-rate initial-production (LRIP) aircraft. This developmental budget cap could be a real challenge – and might help to explain why Lockheed Martin has decided to quit the programme.

Lockheed Martin’s decision to exit the race was announced on 23 April 2026, less than one month after the US Navy released the final request for proposals (RFP) for the UJTS programme on 26 March 2026, with responses due by 29 June 2026.

A Lockheed Martin spokesperson explained that: “Following formal notification to the US Navy, Lockheed Martin has decided not to pursue the UJTS solicitation after careful analysis. We will continue to focus on delivering innovative training solutions and seek opportunities to strengthen our partnership with the US Navy. We remain confident the T-50 platform is a leading-edge fighter trainer with strong capabilities and future potential.”

Lockheed Martin subsequently clarified that the company had “conducted a rigorous assessment of the UJTS solicitation and determined our offering would not be the best solution for this program due to the required level of US content and other reasons”.

A solid platform

Lockheed Martin originally teamed with Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) to offer a modified version of the T-50A for the US Air Force’s (USAF’s) TX jet trainer competition, which was eventually won by the Boeing/Saab T-7A Red Hawk. Subsequently, the same team offered the further modified TF-50A to meet the USAF’s ongoing Advanced Tactical Trainer requirement, as well as the TF-50N for UJTS.

The original T-50 Golden Eagle was designed as an advanced jet trainer for the Republic of Korea Air Force, based on some engineering and design elements from Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Fighting Falcon. More than 250 aircraft from the T/FA-50 family are currently on order or operating with the South Korea, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland and Thailand. There are a number of variants, optimised for training, aerobatic team use and for the light fighter and light combat aircraft roles. In the 21 years since it first flew, the aircraft has gained a formidable reputation, training 2,500 pilots and demonstrating a 90% aircraft availability rate across 300,000 flying hours.

Lockheed Martin attributes this availability to advanced diagnostics, predictive health monitoring and a condition-based maintenance approach that together minimise unscheduled maintenance, providing a good insight into maintenance requirements and improving overall readiness and fleet availability.

Before quitting the competition, Lockheed Martin was upbeat that the TF-50N was an effective, low-risk, scalable solution that would provide pilots with the right tools to enable faster, more efficient training for fourth- and fifth-generation fighter missions and beyond.

Lockheed Martin is expected to continue to offer the basic TF-50A to meet multiple advanced training requirements around the world – including the UK. The company claims outstanding mission performance, “21st Century security advancements” and a production-ready roadmap.

The aircraft still on the table

The withdrawal of the TF-50N leaves three designs in the UJTS competition, ahead of the planned downselect next year and a contract award that is planned for March 2027. Boeing is offering a variant of its T-7A Red Hawk (possibly designated the T-7B), although the type is going through a protracted development/deployment process with the USAF. Selection of this aircraft by the US Navy could entail some risk and it is understood to be the most expensive of the candidates, but it would leverage useful commonality with the USAF’s future advanced training aircraft.

Textron Aviation Defense, working in partnership with Italy’s Leonardo, is offering the Beechcraft M-346N: a derivative of the Leonardo M-346 Master that is in widespread service, with more than 100 delivered to the air forces of Italy, Greece, Israel, Poland, Qatar, Singapore and Turkmenistan, along with more on order for Austria and Nigeria.

Textron Aviation Defense CEO Travis Tyler has said that the proven, mature M-346N is “the right fit for the navy to continue to train before they ultimately go on to the fighters” and that “We wouldn’t be in this competition with this airplane if we didn’t think it was the right fit.”

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), teamed with Northrop Grumman and General Atomics, is offering its unbuilt and unproven Freedom Trainer concept. The company insists that this makes it possible to make adaptations to the design in order to better meet UJTS requirements. SNC has said that the aircraft will be capable of full field carrier landing practice (FCLP) approaches down to touch down, which is unique among the competing designs.

Unlike the US Navy’s previous advanced trainer, the T-45 Goshawk, the new UJTS platform will not undertake carrier landings and launches, as Warsight has previously noted. Nor will it be required to conduct FCLP approaches all the way to touch down, instead only flying an approach until ‘waved off’.

Aircraft simulation capabilities are expected to fill the gap and to prepare naval aviators for carrier landings.
