The Toyota Hilux Invincible X 4×4 pick-up truck has been selected as the future Recce Strike Vehicle for the British Army’s 11 Brigade under Project Niala.
The vehicle was named as the solution in a Parliamentary Answer submitted by UK Defence Readiness and Industry Minister Luke Pollard on 25 June 2026.
The GBP 19.7 million (EUR 22.8 million) Project Niala contract, which covers the supply of 270 Recce Strike Vehicles and an associated support package, was actually awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to Birmingham-based Sonic Communications on 27 April 2026, but when news of the contract was published on 5 June the specific vehicle platform was not mentioned.
The UK MoD contract award notice stated that the vehicles will be delivered by April 2030.
The Project Niala initiative was established to meet an emergent capability requirement for 11 Brigade following its transition from a Security Force Assistance Brigade to a Tactical Recce Strike Brigade.
It is separate from the British Army’s upcoming Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) requirement: the part of the army’s Land Mobility Programme (LMP) that seeks to replace its fleets of Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles with a largely commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)-based solution.
For the LMV requirement Toyota has teamed with Babcock International to offer modified versions of the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Hilux.
Other LMV contenders include Team LionStrike (GM Defense, NP Aerospace and BAE Systems), which is pitching GM Defense Infantry Squad Vehicle variants, the Silverado HD and the Silverado LD pickup, and a team comprising Ford and General Dynamics UK, which is pitching variants of the Ford Ranger.
