BAE Systems has received a contract for two Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems for the Brazilian Navy, the company announced on 15 July 2026.

The guns are being acquired under the Brazilian Navy’s Programa de Obtenção de Navios-Patrulha (PRONAPA) programme, under which it is expanding and renewing its fleet of 500-ton offshore patrol vessels.

The Bofors 40Mk4 is a compact and lightweight naval gun system designed for anti-aircraft, anti-drone and anti-surface warfare operations.

The programmable 40 mm Bofors 3P ammunition that it fires provides the gun with a high degree of combat flexibility, as it can be programmed in six different function modes to provide optimised effects, depending on the target.

“The proven Bofors 40 mm gun, together with the latest in munitions technology, forms a platform ready to meet both the expected – and the unexpected,” BAE Systems stated in its press release, adding that Brazil already operates dozens of Bofors 40 mm guns.
