FIA 2026: Cambridge Aerospace makes Farnborough debut with low-cost air defence effectors
Nascent UK company Cambridge Aerospace made its Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) debut at this year’s show, held at the Hampshire aerodrome from 20 to 24 July 2026, exhibiting its Skyhammer low-cost, modular counter-drone interceptor and its Starhammer concept for a high-speed interceptor to counter higher-value cruise missiles.
Although the company was formed less than two years ago, with a declared mission of developing “advanced air defence systems designed to deliver high performance at significantly lower cost than traditional solutions”, Cambridge Aerospace is already making an impact in the air defence market.
On 10 April 2026 the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the purchase of a “significant number” of Skyhammer air defence systems from Cambridge Aerospace, with deliveries starting from May.
Then, on 13 July, the company was among three suppliers awarded GBP 3.16 million (EUR 3.7 million) by the MoD under the Low‑Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) programme, which is being delivered by the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group as part of a wider European effort known as Low‑Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP). This brings together five countries – the UK, Poland, France, Italy and Germany – to develop affordable effectors and autonomous systems. Each country is running its own national competition, to be followed by a multi-lateral phase, with the aim of stimulating growth across the European defence industry, enhancing collaboration and delivering solutions.
Speaking to Warsight at the show on 21 July, Cambridge Aerospace co-founder and chief commercial officer Chris Sylvan explained the raison d’être behind the company’s operations.
“It’s quite a simple genesis when you think about it, if you look at the news that’s coming out of Ukraine about the scale of threat being posed by ultra-low-cost one-way effectors – Shahed 136, Shahed 238 [one-way attack drones] – and how they are effectively being used by the Russians as a weapon of attrition against the population of Ukraine – and the under-preparedness in Europe to defend against this omnipotent threat,” said Sylvan. “So you look at it from a threat perspective, and the cost of something like a Shahed or something like a Geran [the Russian Shahed-136 variant], it sits somewhere in that USD20,000-30,000 mark. In reality, if you take talent and modern manufacturing capabilities, you can probably build a counter capability, an air defence mechanism, that’s at a similar price point if not cheaper. It’s all about that cost parity and enabling a threat to be defeated by something that’s not costing GBP1-2 million to fire, but ultimately costing somewhere at a similar price point to the threat itself.
“We are mission focused on defending European skies,” Sylvan added. At the end of the day it’s providing that ultra-low-cost air defence capability to a range of users within Europe.”
Skyhammer
Powered by a kerosene-fuelled turbojet, Skyhammer has a range of over 30 km and a top speed of 700 km/h, enabling it to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including drones and low-speed missiles, using an optical guidance system and a dual-band active radar. Weighing 17 kg with a 2 kg warhead, Skyhammer is 1.8 m long and is launched from a 2 m-long launch tube, after which its wings deploy to a span of 1.5 m and operates autonomously from that point and is proximity fused using the onboard radar.
Development of Skyhammer began in January 2025, with initial flight testing achieved within six weeks. Since then, the system “has undergone continuous, iterative testing on a weekly basis, ensuring effectiveness across varied operational scenarios and compatibility with a broad range of sensor systems”. This enables rapid deployment of the system as part of a layered air defence architecture. According to Cambridge Aerospace, recent testing of Skyhammer has demonstrated consistent successful interceptions of drone targets under varied conditions, with the effector demonstrating the autonomous identification, tracking and neutralisation of drone threats.
Sylvan noted that Skyhammer “is now in use. It has been purchased by the UK Ministry of Defence and we’re currently going through a whole lot of engagement iterations with a range of other customers.” He declined to specify whether the system is use with UK forces or, more likely than not, has been passed on to the Ukrainian armed forces, but added that the UK government had been “phenomenally helpful and supportive in getting to us to this point”.
Starhammer
Starhammer, meanwhile, which is still at a fair low Technology Readiness Level, is intended as a rocket-powered, low-cost air defence effector that has a range of more than 20 km, with a speed of Mach 2+, that can target cruise missiles at altitudes of up to 10 km/h. With a length of 2.8 m, Starhammer has a guidance system that features an inertial navigation system and datalink combined with an active radar seeker.
When Warsight suggested that targeting cruise missiles is an altogether more difficult proposition than bringing down drones, Sylvan offered a different perspective.
“So you think about the guidance system, you think about the target acquisition system, you think about the propulsion system that enables us to be effective. It’s slightly different for that, it’s slightly upscaled in terms of speed,” said Sylvan, “but in reality you can take a whole load of learning off the vertical integration of Skyhammer and directly correlate it to what we need to do in order to develop Starhammer.”
Sylvan also noted that employing a lower-cost effector like Starhammer alongside higher-cost, higher-capability missiles such as Patriot PAC-3 rounds – which he estimated to cost around USD 4.8 million each – was all about the ‘depth of the magazine’.
“It’s horses for horses. If you have a high/low mix, you keep your Patriots for the things that Patriots are really, really effective against. When you have things that Patriots are less effective against or less costly, you can fire [a cheaper effector],” said Sylvan, adding that Starhammer would be “good enough against the threats that we’re probably seeing at scale”.
Growth at Cambridge Aerospace
Formed in late 2024, Cambridge Aerospace has scaled rapidly and now employs over 125 people across the UK as well as having a growing presence in Europe. It is also expanding its manufacturing capacity, with a second production facility coming online to support accelerated delivery timelines. (P Felstead)
